After his second place in Forli, Southeast neo-pro Matteo Busato continued his excellent first Giro d'Italia in stage 18.
The young Italian did not hesitate to join the escape after 40km and rode in the lead until the end. In the end he finished fourth after having been narrowly edged out by Sylvain Chavanel in the sprint for third. With the performance, Busato proved to have courage , great determination and cards to play at the end of three weeks of hard racing.
"Despite the fatigue, I managed to get into the escape," he said. "I looked the other escapees. I had goose bumps just thinking about the level of the riders I had next to me. I suffered and this fourth place gives me great satisfaction. I am very tired, we are in the final part of the Giro, and if I listened to my legs I would not start in the morning. I ride with my head. I was so sorry not to be able to join the break yesterday. Today I made up for it. I was also very encouraged by my fan club. They help me to keep up the morale. Now I will try to survive tomorrow's stage which will be tough."
