While Vincenzo Nibali decided to put all eggs in the one basket and focus exclusively on the Tour de France campaign this season, apparently it is not going to happen in 2015, as the 29-year old Italian revealed in the Italian media that he would target the Giro d’Italia as well next year.
Even though the hotly discussed lack of victories since his dominant Giro d’Italia campaign in 2013 certainly hampered a self-confidence of the 29-year old Italian, it won’t matter a thing when the Tour de France kicks off in July. The Astana captain is still capable of saving his 2014 season with a good performance at the French three-week event, but apparently Nibali already regrets the decision to focus all his resources on the only one, highly coveted target.
Thus, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Nibali revealed that he would return to his home grand tour event next season with a will to claim career’s second victory in the Giro, before riding the Tour de France as his second three-week long race.
It hasn’t been commented, however, how it would affect the plans of the Italy’s new darling and Nibali’s team-mate, Fabio Aru.
“I will return to the Giro d’Italia, to win, before riding the Tour,” Nibali said, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
