Vincenzo Nibali may not yet have decided whether he will do the Giro d'Italia but the Italian already has a rough idea about his schedule for the first part of the season. Furthermore, he has indicated that he would like to target the road race at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Yesterday Vincenzo Nibali finished his appointments with his sponsors and it is now time for the Astana rider to enjoy a well-deserved vacation, probably in Dubai. After a meeting in the morning with Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi, Nibali sepnt the afternoon at a presentation of new components from FSAone, one of his technical sponsors.
After the presentation, he anshwered a few questions and the Shark of Messina threw some light on his future plans.
"I'd like to start in Argentina, at the Tour de San Luis. Astana probably won't be there but I know that there will be a national team. If [Italian national coach Davide] Cassani selects me, I can not only be useful, I would also be very happy."
The winner of the 2014 Tour de France has also already looked at 2016 and shows plenty of interest in the Rio Olympics about which he has already spoken with the prime minister
"It is very tempting and I have also spoken with Renzi about it," he said. "We all know that the games have universal value. Cassani told me that the course is hard, very challenging for me. And that stimulates me further."
As for the racing program at the beginning of the year, he will probably go from a debut in Argentina to the Dubai Tour which will be the start of a series of races organized by RCS Sport that will be continued Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo. Then it is time for a high-altitude training camp "before the Ardennes."
Asked about his possible participation in the 2015 Giro d'Italia, he confirmed his interet but made it clear that nothing "has been decided yet". As opposed to this, his presence at the Tour de France is guaranteed as he wants to defend last year's title. The final schedule for Nibali and his teammates will be decided in Montecatini at the first training camp from November 24-28.
Finally, Nibali presented two new projects. One of them is a foundation which will collect money for young riders riding for Mastromarco and a team created in his name, and a humanitarian project, Cycling for Armenia, whose purpose is to build a children's hospital in Yerevan.
