Despite the storm surrounding the team after the positive doping tests from the Iglinskiy brothers and three riders from the continental team, Vincenzo Nibali stays loyal to Astana .The Sicilian says he will not leave the team even if they lose the WorldTour license.
Nibali has no doubts. The last three positives of three young Kazakhs have nothing to do with Astana.
"To be clear, Astana and Astana 2, ProTeam and Continental, are two different things. We have had two cases, the Iglinskiy brothers, but that was a family affair. The other three whom I did not even know, were idiots. I do not really know anything and can only make hypotheses. Mybe they were attractd by the opportunity to obtain a contract here and earn money. But that is their choice. The team has already reacted. The Continental team is suspended and Sedoun (manager) has been fired," he said yesterday in La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Furthermore, Nibali reguses the suggestion that he made the wrong choice when he joined Astana in 2013. He won the Giro d'Italia last year and the Tour de France this year.
"I am convinced that I made the right decision. The core staff is my group. I'm sure they are not going to remove the license but if that happens, I will not leave even though I am allowed to do so. I am not alone here, there is a group of at least 6-7 people. Where should I go? Astana has made an investment in us and we are fine here. I believe in them and they believe in me," he added.
