Vincenzo Nibali has visted the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, bringing along his yellow jersey from the Tour de France. Renzi honoured his compatriot for the win in the 2014 Tour de France.
"If I win again, I hope we can do this again next time," said the Italian after the visit.
During the Tour Nibali already received messages from the Prime Minister who nvited hom to visit his office.
"Nibali's victory in the Tour de France was an extraordinary experience," said Renzi, pointing out that the Astana rider "took the yellow jersey after the second stage, an awesome achievement."
"Those who know cycling, know that this gentleman has won the Giro and the Vuelta before the Tour. Nibali is more than just an athlete, he is a symbol, and I am very happy to have him at Palazzo Chigi," he said. During the Tour I sent him text messages, asking him to come here with the yellow jersey. It's a great victory for Italy and also an extraordinary dream which will serve as inspiration for young riders. I'm happy to host him here and I'm sure that all Italians are grateful for the emotions he gave us."
Nibali is the seventh Italian rider to win the Tour de France.
