NIPPO Vini Fantini is the first zero impact professional cycling team at Giro D’italia. The compensation of greenhouse gas emissions, 60,836 ton CO2 eq, will be possible thanks to an Italian project faircarbon.it, the first Italian platform to neutralize emissions developed by CarbonSink Group.
Giro d’Italia is an amazing show which brings with itself a lof of movements for all the teams and the caravan in order to reach the entire Italian audience. For example, team NIPPO Vini Fantini uses four team cars, one bus and two vans for moving staff, athletes and equipment, so a partnership with the Italian original start-up CarbonSink has been created in order to neutralize its own greenhouse gas emissions.
The way it works consists in very complicated calculations and a very simple idea: to reduce global inequality through compensating in a “green way” CO2 created because of movements, meals, overnight stays, while supporting sustainable development in disadvantaged areas.
CarbonSink Group is a University of Florence’s spinoff, which focuses on projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries, combining research and management.
Team NIPPO Vini Fantini, thanks to its partnership with CarbonSink is going to neutralize all of its greenhouse gaas emissions at Giro d’Italia. The first evaluation coming from the Italian start-up, which is going to recalculated day by day, is 60,8 Tons of CO2 during the entire race. These emissions are comparable to those produced by 20 medium size homes in a year.
This amount is comparable to those of other teams, but the Italian-Japanese team is the first one who is neutralizing its CO2 emissions.
Andrea Maggiani, CarbonSink CEO and founder explains how emissions are calculated: “They are calculated stage by stage, considering the vehicles used, the consumed meals and advertising materials created. The idea behind this partnership belongs to Carbonsink and it was born thanks to our passion for cycling and we wanted to be part of this amazing sport event in which Francesco Pelosi and other guys coming from our hometown La Spezia are protagonists."
Team General Manager Francesco Pelosi is proud about this partnership: “Considering the new cycling and the new additions to the team, this is something new that we would like to promote and we hope it will be an example to follow for other teams, as we wish the same for other new opportunies we propose to the cycling world as for the biological passport”.
