All nine BMC Racing Team riders successfully avoided a pile-up in the finishing straight Thursday that took down a number of riders – including Giro d'Italia race leader Alberto Contador. Also Danielle Colli went down in the crash. In fact, he was the first down after being hit by a camera from a spectator near the finish line.
The crash happened during the bunch sprint that capped the 183-kilometer race through Tuscany. Damiano Caruso, the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider in 11th overall, was the team's top finisher on the day in 29th.
André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) took the stage win from Matteo Pelucchi (IAM Cycling) and Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida). Contador was able to get up and ride to the finish but later could not put on the leader's "maglia rosa" jersey due to injury. Andre Greipel took with the victory also the red jersey from yesterday’s winner Elia Viviani of the Team Sky.
