Juanjo Lobato (1988, Movistar Team) will not do any grand tours in 2016. The Andalusian and his team have opted for "an alternative schedule" in his third season with the Blues.
Lobato has confirmed his calendar in an interview with BiciCiclismo. He will have an identical start to 2015 with the Tour Down Under, Dubai Tour, Clasica de Almerica and the Vuelta a Andalucia. Then he will make his debut in Paris-Nice and face three classics: Milan-San Remo, Ghent-Wevelgem and Tour of Flanders.
"In principle," Lobato will not do any of the grand tours, Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana - just like in 2014 which was his first year at the Movistar Team. In 2015 he did the Giro d'Italia and was second behind Ulissi in Fiuggi before he left the race with a broken collarbone in the 18th stage. Movistar is committed to Valverde in the Giro and want to win the Tour and the Vuelta with Quintana so Lobato will have "an alternative calendar."
Again he will try to shine in the beginning like he did in 2015 when he won a stage in Australia, was third in the Dubai Tour, second behind Cavendish in Almeria and won two stages in Andalusia. In 2016, he has the added bonus of a race like Paris-Nice before he returns to San Remo where he took fourth place in 2014, and Ghent-Wevelgem, another classic he likes. De Ronde will end the first part of his season.
Lobato assumes that it will be "impossible" to get selected for the Olympic Games in Rio, without doing the Tour and with a profile for climbers. Insted, he is focused on the World Championships in Qatar. "If the coach think it suits me, I'll be ready," he says.
Lobato goes into his sixth pro season. He has been riding for Andalusia and Euskaltel-Euskadi before he joined Movistar.
