The performance of Roompot Orange Peloton in the final road race of the first season for the team was in a sense a model for the principles that the initiators formulated over a year ago: to go on the attack with young Dutch talent, improve and compete for medals. In Putte-Kapellen, Brian van Goethem, Wesley Kreder and André Looij got the the attention.
The former two from the selection of Michael Boogerd spent eight of the nine laps in the break. Kreder and Van Goethem were in front for no less than 175 kilometer.
"It was cold this afternoon, so you'd better go on the offensive," laughed van Goethem who also had been ahead in Paris-Tours. "The peloton hesitated long enough in the final so I surely believed in it."
Van Goethem even tried a solo move a little more than three kilometers from the finish but especially Cofidis did not like that idea. Nacer Bouhanni sprinted to victory in the Sluitingsprijs and thus secured the victory in the final individual classification of the UCI Europe Tour. The Frenchman beat Belgians Van Asbroeck and Debusschere. André Looij had to settle for a 14th place.
"And that frustrates me a lot," said the young sprinter at the team bus. "In the last 100 meters I had to brake. It was either that or I would end up in the fences. A real shame as with Wesley and Brian in the break our plan fine. I also sat in a good position. It is really a shame that I couldn't end our last race of the season with a better result," Looij concluded.
