Following a slew of crashes and unrelenting wind, Team Novo Nordisk’s pair of weekend Dutch races ended with Martijn Verschoor finishing in the front group at the Energiewacht Dwars door Drenthe.

Early into Sunday’s 196.8-kilometer race, a dozen riders escaped. Verschoor, who was in the first chase group, crashed shortly after the feed zone. He resumed racing but had pain in his back and hip. With 50 km remaining, the early escapees were caught. Another attack followed when a group of 20 riders escaped and built a gap of around a minute. This group was reeled in on the final laps around Roden. Heading into the finish, Verschoor moved to the front and had good position for the line but a strong wind quickly pushed him back. Manuel Belletti (Southeast) took to the win with Verschoor finishing three seconds behind.

“Today was a really hard race with all of the wind and my crash,” Verschoor described. “I was in third position going into the final 500 meters, but then the wind hit me. Without any protection, I quickly went backwards. The crash didn’t help. I have a little pain from where I hit the ground.”

Manuel Belletti (Southeast) took the win ahead of Barry Markus (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) and Michael Carbel (Cult Energy Pro Cycling).

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, resumes racing on Thursday at the 1.HC GP Nobili Rubinetterie. The 187.5-km race begins north of Milan in Suno and loops through the Italian Lake District before finishing in Stresa.
