According to a report by NOS, the UCI will announce the list of WorldTour teams later today. Apparently, Astana won't be on the list and will have to wait until December 10 to get a clarification of its status.
Unlike most other WorldTour teams, Astana won't get a license for the elite division in 2015 today. The International Cycling Union UCI has announced that they will announce the WorldTour teams for 2015 later today but according to NOS, Astana will not be on the list.
The Dutch TV broadcaster reports that the decision is not final. The UCI has said that Astana will have a definitive clarification on December 10.
The postponement is caused by the five doping cases that have marred the Astana WorldTour and Continental teams in recent months. The UCI is currently investigating the cases to find out whether Astana and team manager Alexandre Vinokourov is involved in the wrongdoings.
If the UCI decides not to give Astana a WorldTour license, it could open the door for Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali to leave the team. However, the Italian said last week that he would stay with the formation even if it will no longer be part of the elite division.
Another Astana rider, Lieuwe Westra, refuses that he plans to leave the team
"At the moment, I am not worried and trust that we will still get a license," Westra told NOS."Therefore, I am certainly not looking for a new team. The only thing I'm focusing on now is to ride as good as possible inParis-Nice."
Vinokourov has told Gazzetta dello Sport that he will appeal the decision to CAS if his team does not get a WorldTour license. In 2013, Katusha successfully appealed a similar decision to the court in Switzerland.
