Lars Petter Nordhaug raced through torrential rain to finish in a select front group on stage five at the Eneco Tour. The heavens opened on a selective day in Limburg as a tough finale was made all the more treacherous on an undulating circuit around Sittard-Geleen.
Nordhaug forced his way into a selection in the hills of Amstel Gold country, crossing the line in a group 27 seconds back on the day's winner after a two-man breakaway held on to contest the stage win.
Johann Le Bon (FDJ) had the power to hold off Dylan van Baarle (Cannondale-Garmin) at the line, while a group of contenders came in just nine seconds back after a thrilling finale.
Among those five men it was Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo) who moved into the overall race lead, holding on by a single second over van Baarle.
Nordhaug, who earlier put in an acceleration on the aptly named Watersley climb, arrived in the next group and jumped 41 spots on the GC into 35th overall as the race continues into the weekend with more selective stages.
