Team Novo Nordisk’s Martijn Verschoor improved upon Sunday’s 12th place finish when he sprinted to 11th place on Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California.

Monday’s stage began in Nevada City and featured three intermediate sprints and one Category 4 climb before a flat finish into Lodi. In the opening kilometers of the 193.7-kilometer stage, four riders attacked and built a maximum gap of 5:15. The quartet held on until the finishing circuits around Lodi. In the final bunch sprint, Mark Cavendish (Etixx-Quick Step) nudged out Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) to take his second consecutive win.

“I wasn’t sure how my legs would feel in the finish but with 10 km to go, I started to feel really good,” Verschoor said. “Unfortunately, I picked the wrong guy to follow in the final few hundred meters and that lost me a few spots. It was good to be up at the front, but I know I can do better.”

Mark Cavendish (Etixx-Quick Step) took the win and held onto the overall leader’s jersey. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) was second, and Wouter Wippert (Drapac Professional Cycling) rounded out the podium.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, continues racing at the Amgen Tour of California on Tuesday with Stage 3. The 169.8-km stage begins in San Jose and features several categorized climbs including Mount Hamilton, an HC or Beyond Classification climb, before an uphill finish back into San Jose.
