On the heels of its strongest start to date, Team Novo Nordisk is looking for more results in the second half of the season. Following a midseason break, the entire team has reconvened in Italy for a high-altitude training camp before resuming racing at the Post Danmark Rundt at the beginning of August.
“I always expect more and more from my riders and the season is far from over,” Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko said. “We are on the cusp of an exciting series of races and hopefully we’ll have a chance to get some great results before 2015 is over. I’m hoping for another win or two and obviously more podiums.”
Up first is the Post Danmark Rundt, which serves as one of Team Novo Nordisk’s key races because it’s the global headquarters of the team’s partner, Novo Nordisk. Through employees and their extended families alone, Team Novo Nordisk arrives in Denmark with over 40,000 fans proudly supporting the team.
“This race is so important to us because Novo Nordisk believed in this project when it looked like we were trying to do the impossible,” Team Novo Nordisk CEO and co-founder Phil Southerland explained. “We want to fly the Novo Nordisk colors proudly to show our appreciation and to prove what fierce competition we’ve become. In Denmark, we would like to be on the podium at least once and consistently in the top 10.”
Immediately after the Post Danmark Rundt, Team Novo Nordisk takes on two races on two different continents; the Arctic Race of Norway and the USA Pro Challenge in Colorado. Both are important and challenging races, but the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team feels up to the test.
“Due to our limited depth in roster, it is a challenge splitting riders between the Post Danmark Rundt and USA Pro Challenge. With slight shifts in racing days between these races this year, it allows us to bring our strongest team to date to Denmark,” Davidenko said. “Many of our riders are riding strong, so we might see some surprises. Looking to the USA Pro Challenge, I have complete trust in our two veterans, Javier Megias (ESP) and Martijn Verschoor (NED). They will show up ready to race and will fight all the way to the line each stage.”
Looking ahead to September, Team Novo Nordisk returns to the Tour of Britain and several other European single-day races before closing out the season with a solid block of racing in Asia.
“We have a series of races in China where we plan to bring our youngest riders,” Southerland explained. “Our plan is to test them and help them grow. Personally, I’m really excited to see how far we can take things this year. Not only are the big races an opportunity to grow as athletes, but the Asian races allow us a chance to ride well as a team and hopefully get even more results. When the team does well, people around the world with diabetes are inspired.”
