The Tour of Hainan continued today with another flat stage, covering 130.7 kilometers from Wenchang to Haikou, the province’s capital. James Glasspool (AUS) joined the first breakaway attempt of the stage, which stayed off the front for most of the day. Following Stage 3, Chris Williams (AUS) is in 14th place overall and Martijn Verschoor (NED) sits at 18th.

Directly following the start, Glasspool rode hard to join a small breakaway of four riders, who rode together for about 100-km before the peloton reeled them back in. Glasspool then stopped to help teammate, Verschoor, who suffered a flat just 10-km out from the finish line. Verschoor recovered, but was unable to get back to the front of the group, finishing as Team Novo Nordisk’s best-placed rider at 21st. Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) took the win in a sprint finish.

“Since tomorrow is going to be such a long day, it was clear the peloton wanted to take it easy and the first move was able to stay away,”said Glasspool.

“I was happy to get into the break and represent Team Novo Nordisk. Now I will focus on helping my teammates for the rest of the race.”

Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) sprinted to the win ahead of Jakub Mareczko (Southeast) and Eduard Michael Grosu (Nippo-Vini Fantini).

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, continues racing at the Tour of Hainan on Friday’s Stage 4, which is the race’s longest stage at 237-km from Haikou to Chengmai.
