Team Novo Nordisk took on the hilly 192.7-kilometer Gran Premio Miguel Indurain in northern Spain on Saturday.

Fast racing began straight from the start as riders fought to break clear. It wasn’t until 10 km into the race that a seven-man break was able to establish a gap. However, the pace behind never let up and the break diminished to four riders on the longest climb of the day. Team Novo Nordisk’s Spanish-native David Lozano rode in the break throughout the entire race. Lozano contested several of the day’s intermediate sprints, taking second in three of the five sprints. Yet as the pace quickened in the peloton, the breakaway’s three-minute advantage was reduced to mere seconds with 47 km to go. Soon after the catch, a new 11-man breakaway was formed. The break rode well together and stayed clear to the finish. On the uphill finish, Angel Vicioso (Team Katusha) sprinted to win.

“The race started with plenty of attacks at really high speed and so it was very hard to get into the break,” Lozano said. “My form is growing and I’ve been active in all of the races I’m doing, so this is a good sign for my upcoming schedule.”

Angel Vicioso (Team Katusha) took the win ahead of Ion Izagirre (Movistar Team) with Beñat Intxausti (Movistar Team) rounding out the podium. Team Novo Nordisk’s best-placed rider was Javier Megias in 21st position.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, continues racing at the Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja on Sunday, April 5th. The riders will tackle a 166-km route with plenty of climbing and a long, flat run to the finish.
