Tomorrow Sven Nys will travel to Mallorca for a two-week training camp. The camp has been planned for some time and has nothing to do with his poor performance in today's opening World Cup race in Valkenburg. Next weekend Nys will again be doing cyclocross races in Belgium.
Today Sven Nys had a diffiuclt day in Valkenburg. Mainly due to the heat, the Belgian champion was never really in the mix. After a mechanical, Nys abandoned the race.
"I had a very bad day as I have had so many times in this kind of weather," he told Sporza. "Last week it was also very hot in Ronse but I still managed to do it."
Today things didn't work for Nys.
"Immediately, I felt that there was no power in the legs. It is difficult to predict when I will have such a day but it is very annoyin that it happens in the first World Cup race."
He guarantees that there is nothing wrong with his condition.
"Otherwise I wouldn't have won last week's race in Ronse. The form is food. I don't want to dwell too long on this. Next week it could be a completely different weather."
After the race, Nys announced that he will start a training camp on Mallorca on Monday.
"My poor performance in Valkenburg changes nothing. I want to prepare optimally for the Koppenbergcross (November 1)."
Next weekend there are no races in one of the three major race series but Nys will still be at the start in Kruibeke and Meulebeke.
"I just fly to Belgium and then back again. After that weekend I go back to Spain where I will finish my training as planned. That has always been the plan."
