Peter Sagan (Cannondale) was involved in a very rare solo crash in yesterday's final stage of the Dubai Tour. Despite hitting the deck in a very fast finale, he only suffered minor abrasions on his left side but lost his 6th place on GC as a consequence.
Peter Sagan is known for his exceptional technical abilities and very rarely hits the deck despite maneuvering his way through the speedy and dangerous bunch sprints. Hence, it was an unusual sight for the worldwide spectators when the Slovakian was involved in a solo crash with 5km to go in yesterday's final stage of the Dubai Tour.
TV cameras failed to catch the incident but managed to show how a clearly frustrated Sagan threw his bike into barriers, having lost the chance to contest the final sprint. The crash happened in a very fast finale where several riders have reported that the peloton travelled at speeds of up to 70km/h.
Despite the pace, Sagan was unscathed and only suffered some minor abrasions on the left side of his body. Hence, he will continue his race schedule as planned.
However, the crash was not without its costs. As it happened before the 3km to go banner, Sagan was not given the same time as stage winner Marcel Kittel and he rolled across the line as the final rider, with a time loss of 2.58. As a consequence, he dropped from 6th to 73rd on GC.
Sagan is still in search of his first win of the season after coming away empty-handed from both the Tour de San Luis and the Dubai Tour. His race schedule will see him do the Tour of Oman, GP Camaiore, Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo, Harelbeke, Ghent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in the first part of the season.
