After a 2015 season that produced seven less wins than in 2014, Orica-GreenEDGE have drastically changed their team, dropping eight riders and picking up seven in a 25-man team.
But the drop in wins isn’t an issue, as 22 of their 28 wins came from rides aged 25 or younger, so with another season of development, those guys should win even more.
“There have been a few changes that we’ve made,” sport director Matt White told VeloNews from his home in Spain. “Sure there are some experienced riders leaving the team, but with Mezgec, Plaza, Txurruka and Juul-Jensen, I think we have some really good replacements.”
Caleb Ewan will be set a high bar, as White has signed Mezgec to help him. White wants five WorldTour wins, a Grand Tour stage amongst them.
“For Caleb, I think a pretty realistic goal will be five WorldTour wins and a stage in a grand tour,” said White. “This year he had one WorldTour win and it was a stage in the Vuelta, and that was a very impressive one. This year it was clearly about development and getting him confident in the sprint group around him because U23 sprinting is very, very different to WorldTour sprinting. But he has done everything we have asked of him and now we are going to ask him to do a bit more, and we have the faith he will deliver.”
For the Yates twins, they will ride the Tour once more, although a GC push may be another season or two away. Esteban Chaves will be expected to try and win both the Giro and Vuelta after taking fifth in the latter this year. He has been given Ruben Plaza and Amets Txurruka to help him achieve this.
“I am very confident that Esteban will be contesting the Giro next year,” White said. “After what we saw at the Vuelta, I think he going to go into the Giro with a lot of confidence and the goal for us is top five.”
Michael Matthews will target Milan-Sanremo and Amstel Gold, where he was thid in both this year. White says he will be World Champion within five seasons, but his main goal for 2016 is to complete his Grand Tour set with a Tour stage win.
“The big one for Matthews is the Tour,” White continued. “That is something that has eluded him, because he has won in the Giro two years in a row and the Vuelta two years in a row. We just don’t know where Matthews’ development is going to take him, because he has done some pretty impressive things already and he’s just getting started.”
