2015 Jayco Herald Sun Tour champion Cameron Meyer has ridden to eighth place on the final stage time trial at the Tour de Suisse this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Colombian climber Esteban Chaves has put in a brave effort for 30th on the stage to finish 14th overall.

Tom Dumoulin (Giant – Alpecin) rode to the stage victory in a time of 48minutes 36seconds, whilst Simon Spilak (Team Katusha) finished second, 18seconds in arrears, to claim the overall title. Meyer was one-minute seven-seconds behind the winning time for eighth.

“Cameron has been thinking about today’s stage right throughout the whole week,” sport director Neil Stephens said. “To a degree, doing a lot of work out in the break yesterday might have taken the edge off him but still, a top ten in the final time trial is a good result for Cam.”

In the overall battle, Chaves was up against it to hold onto a top 15 position overall on a time trial course not suited to the pint-sized rider.

“I really thought holding onto top 15 overall was going to be a big ask,” Stephens said. “But when you look at his time trial today, it’s probably the best time trial he has done in the last couple of years so that is a promising sign for the future as well.”

Overall, ORICA-GreenEDGE complete the nine-stage Tour de Suisse with a stage win courtesy of Michael Matthews on stage four and a top 15 overall.

“A stage win and 14t place on the general classification, I think we can call that a successful week,” Stephens said.

“All of the prospective Tour de France riders went into the start of the Tour de Suisse going well and probably came out of it going even better so that all looks good for the final selection options.”
