BMC Racing Team's Daniel Oss initiated a late breakaway Sunday on the opening stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné.
But the "king of the mountains" winner at the Amgen Tour of California could not follow the attack by Peter Kennaugh (Team Sky) with two kilometers to go. The British national road champion soloed out of Oss's group of five to take the win, two seconds ahead of the peloton.
"He attacked at the perfect moment, right after I took a turn, and nobody followed," Oss said. "I waited a few seconds to attack again, but it was too late. The bunch caught me with 900 meters to go."
