Daniel Oss earned the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Most Courageous jersey for his efforts in the breakaway and teammate Danilo Wyss scored his best result in two seasons Tuesday at the Amgen Tour of California.
Oss spent his second straight day in the breakaway in the 169.8-kilometer race, joining six others. He was the second rider over the day's major climb of Mt. Hamilton and came within one point of earning the lead in the king of the mountains classification. On Monday, Oss spent more than 150 kilometers in a breakaway that was only caught in the last five kilometers.
Wyss's fifth place was his best individual finish since also placing fifth on consecutive stages at the Volta a Catalunya in March of 2013.
Three other BMC Racing Team riders – Ben Hermans (12th), Joey Rosskopf (13th) and Manuel Senni (21st) – finished with Wyss in a group 69 seconds after solo stage winner Tom Skujins (Hincapie Racing Team). Skujins attacked out of the breakaway and held on to win, 66 seconds ahead of Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo), Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) and Daniel Jaramillo (Jamis-Hagens-Berman).
Hermans moved up to eighth place overall, Rosskopf is 14th and Wyss is 16th. All three are among 24 riders less than a minute off the lead of Skujins, who took the yellow-and-blue leader's jersey from Stage 1 and 2 winner Mark Cavendish (Etixx-Quick Step).
“It was a really hard start. I found a good moment and I tried because a few riders were there. I went because it was also good to think about the final climb because maybe from the group someone will want to attack and I can stay there for a teammate to help in the final," Oss said.
