Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky accepted the idea of not becoming a contender to take the Tour the France crown in its 101st edition since he aims to support Christopher Froome in his bid for a second consecutive victory, and third for the British squad in exactly three years. While submissively playing the role of a reliable domestique to Riche Porte [and Mikel Nieve after Porte’s departure] in Tirreno-Adriatico, Wiggins revealed in an interview for Gazzetta dello Sport that he still has some more personal ambitions concerning 2014 season.
In another interview held this season, the 33-year old Briton admitted to have enjoyed racing on a bike more since he was not a defending Tour de France champion, and he confirmed it for the Italian daily newspaper suggesting, that a center of the world has been visibly moved.
“I’m not at the center of the world at the moment, but I still need to dream,” Wiggins told Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Tour de France champion from 2012 rode anonymously so far in Tirreno-Adriatico but it is expected to change in today’s individual time trial with Wiggins hoping to take on Tony Martin, Michał Kwiatkowski and Fabian Cancellara.
Asked about his first important goals of 2014 season, however, the 33-year old Briton pointed out to the Paris-Roubaix in a first place as the Hell of the North would make for a entirely new challenge and he expects to discover a special charm of that brutal race.
“The first goal is the Paris-Roubaix,” he confirmed.
“It’s because I love meeting different challenges. After winning Olympic gold on the track at the Olympic Games in London I have continued in that line. Now I look forward to the classics and among them, the Roubaix has a special charm. It has a long history and tradition, and among all the classics it suits best my characteristics.”
“Now I’m not as light as in 2012, I weight few more kilos. I am more powerful. I am convinced that I can do well in Roubaix for a very simple reason: when facing pave it is exactly like racing agains time,” Wiggins explained Gazzetta dello Sport.
As he has emphasized several times this season, Wiggins once again confessed that participation in this year’s edition of the Tour de France with its Grand Depart to be held in Great Britain is an issue of a very high priority for him, mainly because of emotional reasoning. And once again he admitted that he knows his role..
“With an objective to help my team, Team Sky, to win. I do not consider myself as a center of the world, but a part of my team. I will do everything I can for my team to continue our successful campaigns,” he repeated his mantra referring to a possible participation in the Tour de France.
“I will work for the whole team, not for myself.”
Return to the track racing of a four-time Olympic champion was highly anticipated for some time now and Wiggins confirmed he wants to be a part of a British national team for the Olympic Games held in Rio in 2016.
“I’d go back to the Olympic Games. It has left indelible memories. But it would be wrong to believe that such return is easy. The competition between British track riders is fierce today.”
“Yes, my dream is to win the fifth Olympic gold medal,” Wiggins concluded.
