With a second place finish in the World Cup race in Koksijde, Kevin Pauwels took the overall lead in the World Cup. However, the Belgian was not even close to winner Wout van Aert and the performance by the 20-year-old youngster earned lots of praise from the experienced runner-up.
With his second place in today's race, Kevin Pauwels has taken the overall lead in the World Cup.
"There's still a long way to go but it's nice to get the chance to war the jersey. Now it is important to keep it till the end," he told Sporza.
"Wout van Aert rode very strongly today but at first I didn't know that he was in front. When I was twenty years old, I would not have been able to do that. He is an absolute talent."
Tomorrow the course in Spa-Francorchamps seems tailormade for Pauwels.
"I look forward to it," he said. "There is not too much mud on that course but it is very difficult."
