Even though Alessandro Petacchi still didn’t manage to secure his future in professional cycling, the Italian sprinter doesn’t seem to be worried about his current situation. While he remains highly motivated to continue and reportedly received three offers worth considering, 42-year old rider claims that spending more time with his family would be a good enough consolation prize if none of them turned into reality.
According to tuttobiciweb, Petacchi was linked with Pro Continental Neri Sottoli team and some French squad with young sprinter eager to use his rich experience. The 42-year old Italian hinted, however, that there might be some other option..
"There could be a third way," Petacchi told tuttobiciweb.
Renowned sprinter, working last seasons as a Mark Cavendish’ lead-out man at Omega Pharma – Quick Step, revealed that he would enjoy playing a role of a mentor for younger fast finishers next one or two seasons. He admitted, however, that he’s not too bothered by a prospect of not finding a proper squad for 2015 as spending more time with his family would be a good enough consolation prize.
"I could stop and start a new life, as I have said on another occasion. I would still like to race for a year or two. In particular, I would like to teach cycling, to be put in the service of a team of young talent."
"I would like to race some more, although it doesn' bother me," he explains. "I like it enormously, but I would like to make myself useful to improve young people, be closer to my wife and my little Alessandro, who is now 6, and it is always better to be with him. What can I say? I hope that I can find a new team that works for me, for an old man who still doesn't feel old and has a strong desire to learn and explore new horizons."
