Taylor Phinney was set to make his Tour de France debut this summer but will have to postpone his first appearence in La Grande Boucle. Yesterday he crashed out of his national road race championships and suffered a broken leg.
BMC Racing Team's Taylor Phinney broke his left lower leg in two places and injured his knee after crashing on the descent of Lookout Mountain Monday at the USA Cycling professional road championships. Phinney crashed on a left-hand turn approximately 43 kilometers into the 165.5-km race.
BMC Racing Team Chief Medical Officer Dr. Max Testa said Phinney was undergoing surgery Monday night at a Chattanooga hospital for injuries that included a tib-fib fracture of his left lower leg, and an injury to the same knee.
On Saturday, Phinney won his second national time trial championship. He had planned to debut the stars-and-stripes jersey at the Critérium du Dauphiné next month and was aiming to be a part of the BMC Racing Team's squad for the Tour de France in July.
Teammate Peter Stetina, the only other BMC Racing Team rider in the race, also did not finish. He withdrew due to cramping from dehydration after leading the chase of an early breakaway. Eric Marcotte (SmartStop Pro Cycling) took the win ahead of his teammate, Travis McCabe.
