Despite suffering a horrific leg break that left the bone sticking out of his leg in his National Road Race, Taylor Phinney is targeting a win in the prologue of the 2015 Tour de France and, as a consequence, the race’s first Yellow Jersey.
Despite the 2015 Tour’s route not being officially announced until Wednesday, it is well known that the race will start in Utrecht in the Netherlands with a 13.7km time trial. This could suit the likes of Phinney, Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara.
“If I can come back and do Paris-Roubaix, that would be the best thing, but the Tour is a massive goal for me, especially with the short, punchy prologue. So being able to put on the yellow jersey and maybe winning the world championships are things that I’m trying to look forward to,” Phinney told VeloNews. “Obviously, there is a lot of stuff that needs to happen before I can check off those boxes, but I’m just happy that the Tour is back to putting prologues in. It’s nice of them.”
“I want to be ready for the classics, but I just don’t know whether I’ll be ready to handle that intensity at that point,” Phinney said. “It’s hard to have a full long-term plan, but I’m quite sure that by May or June — a year after the accident — that I’ll be at 100 percent.”
Another target Phinney may have a go at is the Hour Record, recently smashed by Jens Voigt. Phinney says he doesn’t have any plans in the near future for an attempt at taking the German’s crown but he would like to try it in the future.
“I hope so!” he said. “No plans but I’m really happy for the sport that it is becoming a cool thing to do again.”
