Stefano Pirazzi finished the Giro d’Italia yesterday as the winner of the King of the Mountains classification. The climber of Bardiani Valvole – CSF Inox Pro Team conquered the jersey on stage 9 in Firenze and kept it until the end of the race, achieving points in every stage, which included a mountain.
In the KOM classification, Pirazzi dominated with 82 points, ahead the maglia rosa Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) both with 45 points.
“I started to think about this jersey last winter during the first team training camps,” said Pirazzi. “Now a dream has come true. It’s something incredible and it’s hard to describe how I feel. It wasn’t easy to keep the jersey from stage 9 till today [Sunday]. I had to attack every day to get some points and have a margin over the other riders. For a climber this jersey is very important and even for my team. Now I think this great result will start a new journey of my cycling career where I’m ready for more responsibilities.”
In the overall final classification, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) won the race ahead Rigoberto Urán (SKY) with a gap of 4’43” and Cadel Evans (BMC) with 5’52”. Pirazzi finished 44th - 1.31.10 behind Nibali.
