Even though Wout Poels has been appointed to shadow Rigoberto Uran as his key domestique in the mountains and claims that it remains his predominant objective, the 26-year old Dutchman still hopes to be able to chase his own opportunities in the Spanish Grand Tour.

Even though Poels recently makes the headlines mainly due to his expected move to Team Sky for 2015 season, speaking to Dutch media, the 26-year old climber was focused on the present happenings this time around. The winner of this year’s Vuelta a Pais Vasco queen stage admitted that despite riding in a demestique capacity for the Omega Pharma – Quick Step leader, he still hopes to be given a free hand in the final week of racing.

“The main goal for the whole team remains supporting Rigoberto [Uran] in his general classification ambitions. And it’s going damn well,” Poels told NU.nl.

Indeed, following another impressive time trial, the 27-year Colombian returned to provisional podium of the Vuelta, losing over one minute to race leader Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo).

In such circumstances, Poels hopes to be given a nod by the Belgian team to join a breakaway and contest a victory in one of the remaining mountain stages.

“In a big breakaway, like the one consisting of about thirty men in the mountain stage last Sunday, I should be allowed to go. I think the team wouldn’t have any problems with that.”

The 26-year old Dutchman first wanted to try his luck in the Wednesday’s stage to Santuario de San Miguel de Aralar, but didn’t manage to join a day’s breakaway and the mountaintop finish was eventually decided by race leaders.

Poels sees a queen stage on Monday his another opportunity to give breakaway attempt a go, hoping to claim his first victory at the Grand Tour level.

“The queen stage on Monday is the best chance to hive breakaway attempt a go, but I have my sights on the mountain stage on the penultimate day as well,” the Dutchman concluded.
