It was another good day for Team Southeast that, despite the absence of Mauro Finetto, took a double top 10 at Tre Valli Varesine with Simone Ponzi in 4th and Francesco Gavazzi in 10th.
The riders were protagonists during the last lap of the race, first with Andrea Fedi who attacked solo on the climb of Montello before been caught with 4km to go, and then with Simone Ponzi and Francesco Gavazzi, who were in the chase group behind Vincenzo Nibali, winner with a brilliant solo attack 3.5km from the finish line.
Between the Sicilian rider and the bunch, Sergey Firsanov was brave and able to take 2nd place before Giacomo Nizzolo beat Simone Ponzi by a few centimetres.
With this double top 10m Team Southeast increseases the advantage on Team MTN in the Coppa Italia classification.
“The team has been great! They’ve closed a gap to 25 riders, giving me the chance to play my cards in the finale," Ponzi said.
“Nibali was really strong today so I decided to move before him but unfortunately nobody followed my attack. I feel really good and I hope to carry on like this and to win a race before the end of the season," Fedi said.
