Simone Ponzi (YellowFluo) is back on track after a couple of disappointing seasons. Four days after winning the Ronde van Drenthe, he took the victory in today's GP Nobili Rubinetterie, the warm-up race for Sunday's Milan-Sanremo, and he now hopes to carry his good form into the biggest Italian classic.
Luca Scinto's YellowFluo team have had a reputation of reviving the careers of riders who have stalled, and this year it seems that they have done it again. Having already won the GP Costa degli Etruschi in his first race for his new team, Simone Ponzi added the Dwars door Drenthe to his palmares last Sunday and today he continued his fantastic run of success when he emerged as the strongest in the GP Nobili Rubinetterie.
Ponzi was regarded as a big talent but his progress seemed to have stalled at Astana in the last few years. In an attempt to reignite himself, he joined the YellowFluo team and the move seems to be a wise one.
Ponzi got his season off to a great start when he won the GP Costa degli Etruschi, his very first race with his new team, but was then set back by a knee injury. His two recent wins prove that he has hit peak condition just in time for his dream race, Milan-Sanremo.
"I amvery happy for this success, the third for me since the start of the season," he said. "I have had a mixed start. On one hand, I have won a lot but on the other bursitis in my knee forced me to stay awat from racing from almost the entire month of February.
"I must confess that I struggled on the climbs in today's race but the team did a fantastic job to keep the race together and help me to stay in the group. The sprint? I took the wheel of Belletti, and with 70m to go I opened a gap and gave it my all to the finish line.
"Milan-Sanremo? It is the next target together and the dream of my life. I will be there with great morale and perfect condition so I hope to crest the Cipressa and the Poggio with the best."
