The primary focus for Monday’s sprint stage into Porto Sant’Elpidio was to stay safe and upright in the miserably wet and cold weather on hand all day long for stage 6.

"Today was a really hard day due to the weather conditions – cold and rainy. A lot of people were suffering today which is why we saw many riders dropped near the end. Our goal was to bring Porsev in front for the sprint but like many of the other sprinters, he was one who suffered today. We kept Joaquim in good position, safely with the other GC guys. Angel Vicioso did not start today. After yesterday’s stage he felt cold and through the night he didn’t feel well. This morning when we saw the cold and wet weather we decided it was better for him to not start. We need him for more important races still to come so it’s better to be cautious now when he only feels a little bad. We don’t want to make things worse for him," said team director José Azevedo.

The long 210 km stage took more than five hours to complete and ended in a reduced field sprint won by Peter Sagan of Tinkoff-Saxo in his first victory of the season. Coming across the line a full bike length behind were Gerald Ciolek (MTN-Qhubeka) and Jens Debusschere of Lotto Soudal. Luca Paolini became the best Katusha's rider with 13th position. There was no change for the overall classification and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) continues to hold the lead by 39-seconds to Bauke Mollema. Team Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez is 8th on the classification at 1.07.

A break of three riders went clear after 20 km of racing but were brought back early under the driving pace of Tinkoff-Saxo working for Sagan. It was the climb on Montelparo that shelled many riders off the back, namely the sprinters, and the reduced field neutralized a second small break near the 3 km mark. The riders left set up for the mass sprint with Sagan biding his time and launching at the last moment to take the win.

Only one stage remains to be raced in the 2015 Tirreno – Adriatico and that is Tuesday’s individual time trial. The effort against the clock will be held in San Benedetto del Tronto and is 10 km long. The course profile is perfectly flat and any changes in the classification will come from weather or mechanical issues, certainly not from the difficulty of the course.
