Mirsamad Pourseyedigolakhour wrote history today when he became the first Asian rider to win the Tour de Langkawi. However, his win has raised eyebrows due to his doping past but the Iranian insists that his win is a clean one.
Tabriz Petrochemical Team's Mirsamad Pourseyedigolakhour was today confirmed as Asia's first ever overall winner of Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) after the finals stage won by Astana's Andrea Guardini to bring his record of stage wins in the race to 14.
Pourseyedigolakhour celebrated the victory after some hard work by his team to keep his slim 8 seconds lead over second placed Merhawi Kudus of MTN-Qhubeka in the six stages that followed the queen stage of the race in Genting Highlands on the fourth stage.
"I am especially proud to be the first Asian rider to win the overall title in this race. After 19 years it has happened, so this is a big victory for me and for Asian cycling," said Pourseyedigolakhour, who also became the first Asian to win the Genting Highlands stage in LTdL.
"After the fourth stage in Genting, my team had to work really hard to protect the lead, especially in some very long stages that followed. So, I have to thank them."
Pourseyedigolakhour's win raised eyebrows as he has previously served a two-year ban for doping. However, he insists that their is no way that his win will ever be scratched from the history books.
“I promise that I and all other riders on our team are clean," he said. "We are clean and we work hard and we do hard training always.
"Now I am training and doing a lot of hard work. Before we came here we did a training camp in Iran and other big countries. At the moment our country is cold so we went for some hot weather. Right now I am doing a lot of hard work and hard training. I am in a strong team and I will do my best for cycling and to keep cycling every day.”
Last year, he won the Tour of Quingai Lake which is the other major Aisan stage race.
