Belkin had a highly successful Tour de France and the team has now set its sight on a similarly positive showing in the final grand tour of the year, the Vuelta a Espana. Bauke Molleme will use the race to prepare for the worlds while Steven Kruijswijk and Laurens Ten Dam hope to make an impression on GC.
Having had a couple of disappointing performances in their most recent Tours de France, Belkin finally found success in the world's biggest race this year. Bauke Mollema cracked the top 10 in his 3rd attempt, finishing 6th, and Laurens Ten Dam long appeared to also finish in the top 10 before ultimate fading and dropping down to 13th.
That encouraging performance has set the team up for another successful showing at the Vuelta a Espana and the squad plans to line up a powerful roster. Ten Dam will once again target the GC in the race that was the scene of his breakthrough as a grand tour rider. Last year he formed a strong duo with Robert Gesink and the two Dutchmen finished 8th and 6th respectively.
He will join forces with Steven Kruijswijk who will also target the GC. The Dutchman had breakthrough performances in the 2010 and 2011 Giro where he finished 18th and 8th respectively. Last year he had a disappointing debut in the Tour while he worked for Gesink in the Giro earlier this year. He is now ready to once again target some personal success in a grand tour.
Tour captain Mollema will also race in Spain but this time he won't have any GC ambitions. The Dutchman is not only a good grand tour rider but also a splendid classics specialist who has mixed it up with the best in the Ardennes during the last two seasons. The hilly course for the world championships suits Mollema and he will use the Vuelta to prepare for a rainbow jersey campaign.
Belkin still hasn't announce its complete roster for the Vuelta. However, Luis Leon Sanchez has said that the Spanish grand tour is his major objective this season and it would be a surprise not to see veteran Juan Manuel Garate as another important mountain domestique on the Dutch roster.
