Marcel Kalz took an impressive revenge for his paper-thin last year's defeat, taking a convincing victory together with his Danish partner Alex Rasmussen in the 2015 Six Days of Bremen on Tuesday night. Overnight leaders Morgan Kneisky and Jesper Morkov eventually took the runner-up spot while defending champions Leif Lampater and Wim Stroetinga had to settle for third.
The extremely powerful German-Danish combination started the untimate evening one lap down on other two pairs remaining in contention, but emphatically leading in points, and turned such situation into their advantage thanks to good tactics in the final Madison.
Rasmussen and Kalz rode hidden behind the backs of Kneisky/Morkov and Lampater/Stroetinga in the decisive long chase on Tuesday, finishing first of their successful attacks only 14 laps before the end of the race, becoming virtual leaders thanks to their huge points advantage. It wasn't enough for the powerful Dane and German, though, as despite a very visible fatigue they immediately went on yet enother attack, and as they heard a bell with only 4 laps remaining the new champions of the Six Days of Bremen were known.
The victory was due to impressive power combined in one pair as well as tactical astuteness, as they managed to save their energy for final 20 laps of the last Madison and seemed uninterested in competing for the victory, while two leading combinations were constantly attacking each other. Thus, nor Kneisky and Morkov, neither Lampater and Stroetinga could find a response when the German-Danish pair eventually went on full offensive.
Overnight leaders found a last bit of energy to compete in the final sprint and add another 10 points to their account, but it couldn't change anything.
„That took a lot of power, but it's finally over,” exhausted Kalz said after winning the race, according to Six Days of Bremen official website.
Asked about their tactics for the final Madison, the German riders admitted that he wanted copy a scenario from last year's edition of the even, when he was narrowly defeated in quite the same fashion.
„Something like last year when we were deprived of a victory in a very reckless way, as Wim Stroetinga defeated me in the sprint and took the race overall.”
The 2015 Six Days of Bremen marked the final track event for Luke Roberts, who will remain engaged in professional cycling by taking a role of sports director in Danish CULT-Energy Pro Cycling squad. He finished last in Bremen, 28 laps down on Rasmussen/Kalz, but shared his impressive experience with debuting in the Six Day arena Bobby Lea.
