The fifth Vuelta stage ended with a sprint in the streets of Alcalá de Guadaíra. Kris Boeckmans was meant to be the sprinter for Lotto Soudal, but a puncture made that impossible. Tosh Van der Sande took his place and finished ninth. Caleb Ewan won the stage.
“Kris was our man for today, but he got a flat tyre in the finale. It was impossible for him to return to the peloton. Three kilometres before the finish the sports director told me I had to sprint," van der Sande said. "Adam Hansen took me to the front, but it’s never easy to make the switch that late in the race. There were a few roundabouts in the finale and the last 500 metres there was a gradient of about 7%, so it was an uphill finish. I got ninth, which is a good result. My condition is good and I am looking forward to the rest of this Vuelta.”
