The 2016 World Championships course was presented in Doha, the capital of Qatar, yesterday.
The race will take place on October 9 with the team time trial and finish on the 16th with the showpiece event, the Elite Men’s Road Race.
The route is flat as the organisers didn’t want to build artificial climbs for the race. There will be 1.2km of cobblestones on each lap however.
The time trial courses will be presented at this year’s Worlds in Richmond but the race organising committee confirmed that the road races for the elite athletes would comprise of an 80-kilometre loop in the desert before an unspecified number of circuits in the centre of Doha.
All races, from the juniors up to the elites will start and finish near the Doha Exhibition Centre before heading through the centre of Katara. Soon after they will tackle the 1.2 kilometres of new cobblestones.
From there the race will head towards the Pearl, a technical sector with changes of direction and near the sea, so crosswinds could be crucial. The race then loops around the Pearl once more before returning through Katara and the two-kilometre finishing straight.
The route is still awaiting complete approval from the UCI, who were presented with the majority of the route in September of the last year.
