Nairo Quintana was forced to abandon Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday after suffering second crash in less than 24 hours, continuing the run of misfortune of biggest general classification contenders in Grand Tours this season. Due to undergo a surgery on his right scapula, the 24-year old Colombian remained high spirited and optimistic about his future in professional cycling.
Quintana was able to continue his effort against the clock after suffering a bad looking crash on a descent on Tuesday, even though his chances for winning the 69. edition of the Vuelta seemed to be crushed due to huge time loss. In such circumstances, the 24-year old Colombian was expected to support Alejandro Valverde in his battle for a victory in the Spanish Grand Tour, but such prospects were also suddenly turn to dust, when the Movistar rider hit the deck for the second time involved in the massive pile-up in the opening part of 11th stage to Santuario San Miguel de Aralar.
Movistar team quickly informed via their Twitter account that the former leader of the Vuelta won’t be able to continue, and medical check-up revealed a fracture of his right scapula.
Expected to undergo a surgery Thursday afternoon in the San Miguel clinic in Pampelona, Quintana remained optimistic about his recovery and quickly turned his focus into new objectives of upcoming 2015 season.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” Quintana said. “It’s ok, it’s just a collarbone injury and in a two weeks I should be recovered.”
“I’m in quite a lot of pain. It was something very sudden and there were 20 or 25 of us on the ground,” Quintana said on arriving in hospital, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Destiny didn’t want me to finish this Vuelta, and you can’t go against destiny, you can’t do anything. Patience, I’ll have other chances to win this race.”
