"I like San Luis." With these words, Colombian Nairo Quintana has told BiciCiclismo that he will be at the start of the 2015 Tour de San Luis. "It is important for all the fans in American and Argentina because they identify themselves with me. It is a pride for them and for my part I am happy and flattered," he continued.
Nario Quintana who has decided to make the 2015 Tour de France his next big goal, feels the appreciation from the Latin American fans and despite his many commitments, he has decided to give something back.
He has only done one Tour de France in 2013 where he finished second behind Chris Froome. Having won the Giro d'Italia, his natural target for 2015 is the Grande Boucle. "But he is under no pressure," Movistar manager Eusebio Unzue said. "Only one rider can win and even though he is definitely one of the candidates, Nario is still young and should continue learning. The first goal is to get to the start in a good condition."
Hence, the choice of race schedule is very important and Quintana has now decided to start his season at the Tour de San Luis. "The rest of the program is yet to be decided," Unzue said. "But after winning the Giro, he just did the Vuelta a Burgos and a few stages of the Vuelta a Espana and so we feel that it is right for him to start to race very early. However, he will need to stay cautious because the target is the month of July."
Hence, Quintana will be back to defend the title that he won in the eighth edition of the Argentinean race. "Thanks to the good weather, it is ideal for building a basis," Unzue said. He does not rule out that his leader will fight for the victory. "Last year he was also quiet but as the race went on, he got into shape."
Although he will only turn 25 years old in February, Quintana has an impressive palmares, with victories in the Tour de l'Avenir (2010), Giro d'Emilia and Ruoute du Sud (2012), Vuelta al Pais Vasco (2013) and Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Burgos (2013 and 2014) in addtion to his win in the Tour de San Luis and the prestigious stage victories in Italy (Vall Martello and Cima Grappa) and in France (Semnoz).
