The health condition of the Movistar Team leader Nairo Quintana received plenty of attention from the world of cycling, as the Colombian star was one of the several riders participating in the Tour the San Luis, who suffered from gastroenteritis prior to the first stage of the season opening event.
As we reported earlier this day on Cyclingquotes, Quintana, being the main favorite to claim the victory in the mountainous Argentinean event, overcame the illness and managed to get safely through the day partially thanks to a relatively easy route of the first stage, while quite similar circumstances forced experienced Italian sprinter Alessandro Pettacchi to abandon, having only 30 kilometers of racing in his legs.
As it was recently reported on Biciciclismo, Quintana’s health condition has improved overnight and Colombian climber, together with Movistar Team sports director Jose Luis Jaimerana, are hoping for an easier day in the saddle today.
“Considering all the circumstances, the situation hasn’t gotten worse and he [Quintana] is in a good mood. He slept fairly well and eaten breakfast without problems,” Jaimerana told Biciciclismo.
“His condition seems to be getting better, but while racing in such circumstances and in such heat, you can’t be certain. Yesterday he was even forced to stop several times due to the illness. He knew he had to go on and save the day because he was one of the possible candidates for final victory, though,”
Quintana himself also commented shortly his condition while he was caught in the Vista Hotel in the capital, confirming the words of his sports director.
"I woke up fine, I feel better and hopefully I can get through the today’s stage in good condition," he claimed.
