Despite the increased terror threat, tomorrow's Cyclo-Cross World Cup race in Koksijde will be held as planned. "There has been consultation this morning," said Isabelle Deshayes from the town of Koksijde, "but the race continues. A decision regarding special security measures was taken and they will be applied."
The third round of the World Cup takes place on Sunday in Koksijde. The organizers are expecting around 10,000 spectators. Earlier this week, additional security measures were announced and they will be retained. "This morning, following the decision to riase the terror level, we have received an email from the mayor and the chief of police that the race can take place," said Isabelle Deshayes. "There is no question of cancellation."
To organize the World Cup safely, a decision was taken earlier this week to deploy additional troops and agents to keep an eye on things. Spectators are advised not to bring backpacks and bags to Koksijde.
"Metal detectors will be used at the entrance control," said Deshayes. "The controls will take longer time. Hence the advice: Keep your bags at home and make sure that you arrive in good time for the race."
The 75th Lotto Z6sdaagse Flanders-Ghent will not be cancelled either. The organizers have issued a press release to make it clear that the race will go on.
"Earlier this week the organizers introduced several measures relating to the safety," it reads. "One of those measures is that there will control of bags at the entrance. Backpacks, travel bags and similar items are not allowed. The organizers provides a place to keep it in custody, after which they can be picked up at the exit of the Kuipke. However, the organizers ask people not to bring backpacks / travel bags. (Smaller) handbags are allowed but will also be checked."
The race will end on Sunday. The Belgian-Danish duo Iljo Keisse/Michael Morkov lead after four days of competition.
