Team and riders face unknown future after retailer's decision to withdraw from cycling.
According to a report in French daily L’Èquipe, RadioShack will put an end to its sponsorship of the RadioShack-Leopard team at the end of the current season. The US electronics vendor is allegedly blaming financial losses, an alteration of sponsorship focus, and the current doping disclosures within the sport for its decision.
Inevitably, doping within cycling is reported to have played a major role in RadioShack's decision. Former RadioShack-Leopard rider Lance Armstrong has been given a lifelong ban and confessed to having doped throughout most of his career, although not during his time with RadioShack, while former RadioShack team manager, Johan Bruyneel, also faces a possible lifetime ban. He was let go from the team in October 2012 after the USADA's reasoned decision was issued, which detailed his role in the US Postal System’s doping scheme.
Furthermore, Fränk Schleck is currently serving a one-year doping ban for a positive test at the 2012 Tour de France whilst racing for the team.
