After a highly successful cobbled season, Radioshack-Leopard turns its attentions to the hilly races in the Ardennes. In the traditional warm-up race, the Brabantse Pijl, the team hopes to see Tony Gallopin, Ben Hermans or Jan Bakelants in the mix.
Fabian Cancellara was his usual dominant self in the cobbled classics and his Radioshack team can look back at the first part of the classics season with every reason to be satisfied. With the Swiss now resting, the team hopes to continue its success in the hilly one-day races.
The first of those is Wednesday's Brabantse Pijl which is the traditional warm-up race for the three Ardennes classics. Not as hard as the three big WorldTour races in the coming days, the race is an amalgamation between an Ardennes classics and a cobbled classic and suits riders who excel in both types of races.
The Radioshack team hopes to improve on last year's performance where the team missed the key move. The team presents a versatile line-up with a number of options.
The captain is most likely to be Tony Gallopin. The talented Frenchman has struggled to hit his peak in the early part of the season but with a recent 4th place in the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe he finally seems to approach his best. With a powerful sprint and strong climbing abilities, he is perfectly suited to the race.
He will be assisted by the Belgian duo of Ben Hermans and Jan Bakelants who both excel in the Ardennes. The condition of both is, however, unsure as Bakelants lines up in his first race since February after recovering from a knee injury. Hermans missed his key preparation race, the Vuelta al Pais Vasco, due to illness but showed some promise in the Criterium International.
Maxime Monfort is another option for the team. After entering the Vuelta al Pais Vasco sick, the Belgian improved throughout the race and left Spain with plenty of optimism. The course may not be hard enough for the Belgian but he should be able to provide valuable assistance for Gallopin.
The team is completed by an in-form Matthew Busche, Stijn Devolder - who was a key ingredient in Cancellera's success on the cobbles - Ben King and super talent Bob Jungels who continues to impress in his first season as a professional.
