Francesco Gavazzi (Androni) took his first big win in a one-day race since 2010 when he finished off excellent work from the Androni team to win Memorial Marco Pantani. After his team had worked hard to create a small 19-rider front group and keep the peloton at bay, the Italian beat Matteo Busato (Wilier) and Paolo Toto (Norda) in the sprint to take his second win of the 2016 season.
We have gathered a few reactions.
Androni manager: Gavazzi deserves this win after his many places of honour
"I think that today we really deserved to win because we made the race,” Androni manager Gianni Savio told Tuttobiciweb. “In the technical meeting that we had in the morning, John Ellena and I told the guys that they had to make the race hard to avoid getting to the finish with riders like Belletti whom we can’t beat in a sprint. And I also said that if there was a break, we had to be there to avoid the risk that the group fell asleep and let them ride away. The guys were great. Frapporti immediately went on the attack with Tonelli and has been an important reference point. They have done an amazing job and Franco Pellizzotti and Torres Agudelo made sure that the group stayed away and also closed the gap to Zilioli who made a good attack on the last lap of the final circuit. Gavazzi deserves a victory. Fo not forget that from the beginning of the year he is always in the top positions: second in Donoratico and Appennino, fifth in Laigueglia and he finished it off with a third place a few days ago in Agostoni.
“Today we played a 1-6-1 - with one in the escape, Frapporti, six riders who rode for Gavazzi, our striker who made the winning goal.”
