19-year-old Vincenzo Albanese (Italy) delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2016 season when he emerged as the fastest in a reduced bunch sprint at the Trofeo Matteotti. The Italian youngster dug deep to make it over the climbs on the tough circuit and finally beat Manuel Belletti (Wilier) and Davide Vigano (Androni) in a 25-rider sprint to take the first win in a professional race.
We have gathered a few reactions reaction.
19-year-old surprise winner: I was just glad to get the experience
"I am very satisfied, I did not expect this,” Albanese told Tuttobiciweb. “I was born in 1996. I was happy to get this experience with the big guys so it is fantastic to finish first ahead of them. I have to say thanks to Marcato and Marangoni who have encouraged me in the final and all the Italian team led by Amadori and Cassani. I did it, I'm happy. For me this is a fantastic achievement. I still can’t believe it.”
Talented neo-pro close to victory in Trofeo Matteotti
Nippo-Vini Fantini was close to victory as he was caught less than one kilometres from the finish
Sports director Stefano Giuliani said: “In the final km I started to believe very much in this action. As a team we have been working very much to bring the break back and then Iuri Filosi made the action exactly when and how we agreed to do it in the morning meeting. So it was all perfect. Then it’s normal that the other competitors make their own race. Sometimes it could go well for you, sometimes for the other competitors, but you must be there to try to win. It was a good job by Iuri. This is what he can and must do in each race. The victory will come.”
