Davide Rebellin tried a late move in the Grand Prix Cycliste la Marseillaise but at the end of the day it came down to a bunch sprint. Tomasz Kiendys was the highest finisher among the “riders in orange”.

"I surged clear on the final climb but the group that I was in, got caught in the last kilometer. I was feeling very well in the end and despite finishing outside the top 10 I’m satisfied with this race. It was a very good training and the opportunity to improve my form," Davide Rebellin said afterwards.

After a series of attacks, a 5-man breakaway was formed with Conor Dunne (An Post-Chainreaction), Julien Duval (Armée de Terre), Frederik Veuchelen (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Steven Tronet (Auber 93) and Thomas Vaubourzeix (Veranclassic-Ekoi). They gained an 11-minute advantage, but it was brought back with 16km to go.

This is when the riders began their series of attacks from the bunch. One of those who broke clear was Davide Rebellin. He got involved in 4-man escape which established a 35-second lead. Later they were joined by counterattacking riders creating an 8-man group. The cooperation was not working well and the breakaway was caught by the peleton.

Pim Ligthart (Lotto Soudal) was the strongest  in the bunch sprint and claimed the win. He bested Kenneth Vanbilsen (Cofidis) and Antoine Demoitie (Wallonie – Bruxelles).

Tomasz Kiendys arrived at the finish in 17th place, the highest among the CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders. Rebellin was 47th.

In few days the same line-up will take part in the stage race Etoile de Bessèges (4-8.02).
