After Caleb Ewan’s nasty crash yesterday, the work of ORICA-GreenEDGE on stage three of the Tour de Pologne was pleasing to see, a sign the 21-year-old neo-pro was feeling good enough to contest for other stage opportunity.
The Australian outfit committed the ever-reliable Christian Meier to much of the team’s work throughout the day before the whole team pitched in for the closing stages on the finishing circuits in Katowice.
Ewan was amongst the action in the finale but was boxed in the middle, never really opening up his sprint to finish 16th. Matteo Pelucchi (IAM Cycling) took his second consecutive victory.
“Caleb felt OK and he didn’t have any significant problems so the guys were definitely keen to have another shot at it,” sport director Matt Wilson said.
“We had a plan going in not to really commit a full lead out in the final because it was downhill and really hard to do.
“We tried something different. We tried to sit back behind but unfortunately the guys lost each other on the climb so it didn’t really work out.”
