According to reports in Spanish media, Alberto Contador will retire at the end of the 2016 season.
Today the Spaniard attended a Fundación Alberto Contador event where he elaborated on his thoughts about retirement,
“Physically [I’m] recovered well and I’m excited about the team, but the years pass. Next year I’ll be in the squad, but will be the last,” Juan Gutierrez from AS reports the Tinkoff-Saxo rider to have said.
And he hopes to go out on top.
“If I ask myself the Giro and the Tour is not worth me being second in any of them,” he said. “I’m just looking to win, but then we’ll see what happens. I am maverick and victory is all that I ask myself.”
Contador also spoke to El Mundo where he indicated that his retirement is imminent.
"As I see it now, I will ride this year and next year," he said. "But anything can happen. If I crash in the 2016 Tour and have to withdraw, I won't say goodbye.
"I have often said that I only want to stop after winning a grand tou."
This year he wants to win both the Giro and the Tour de France.
"Those who prepare only for the Tour ahve the best chances to win. The time to recover after the Giro is very short, but the difficulty motivates me for this challenge," said Contador.
It is not yet known which team he will ride for in 2016 as his Tinkoff-Saxo contract will expire at the end of the year.
"I take time to consider everything. I will do what suits me from a personal and sporting point of view," he said.
