Men's Pursuit: Weinstein the strongest
Domenic Weinstein, European silver medallist in the individual pursuit, knew he was in great form. But he still had to prove it on the Cali track. And that is exactly what the 21-year-old German did in the pursuit final in the Colombian velodrome with a stylish victory in 4:20.069 over the British rider Andrew Tennant (4:22.095). Tennant had finished fastest in qualifying with a personal best (4:19.992) but opted for a higher gear in the final. Although the tactic did not pay off, Tennant commented: "It's still my first individual medal, so I'm satisfied." In the ride for third place, Russian Dmitry Sokolov (4:22.141) got the better of the Netherlands' Dion Beukeboom (4:23.725).
Men's Keirin: Eilers again
Already a winner in the Team Sprint the previous day, Germany's Joachim Eilers secured an individual victory with a convincing performance in the Keirin event. The 25-year-old sprinter beat Australia's Matthew Glaetzer to the line (+ 0.093), who said: "I executed my plan perfectly. When Eilers went past me, I tried to follow but he was too strong." New Zealand's Edward Dawkins (+ 0.201) took third ahead of the reigning World Champion, François Pervis.
Women's Sprint: Zhong's double
"Maybe she wasn't the fastest but she was definitely the strongest," smiled coach Benoît Vêtu after the victory of Tianshi Zhong in the sprint. The day after winning the Team Sprint, the Chinese rider returned to the top step of the podium after overcoming her compatriot Shuang Guo (Giant - Max Success Sports Pro Cycling Team) in the final. In the match for third place, Hong Kong's Wai Sze Lee beat World Champion German Kristina Vogel.
Women's Scratch Race: Cuban victory
Fourth in the road race at the Pan American Games this year, Cuba's Arlenis Sierra Cañadilla engineered a superb victory in the scratch race to pull on the UCI Track Cycling World Cup leader's jersey. In a race run at a stunning 49.353 km/h average speed, she beat the Belgian Lotte Kopecky and American Jennifer Valente to the line.
After the first day of racing in the Omnium, Britain's Laura Trott (114 points) leads the women's event while Russia's Viktor Manakov (108 points) heads the men's competition.
The UCI Track Cycling World Cup ends in Cali today with the final events in the Omnium, Men's Sprint, Madison and Women's Keirin.
