According to a report in La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian coffee giant Segafredo will sponsor Trek Factory Racing in 2016 and for the next three years. The new name will be Trek-Segafredo.The Italian sports daily also confirmed that the goal is to sign Vincenzo Nibali.
La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Trek will announce "a major sponsor" before Christmas. Reportedly, Segafredo, the most widespread coffee brand in Italy, will join forces with the cycling team led by Luca Guercilena and Fabian Cancellara which will be renamedTrek-Segafredo from 2016. The agreement is for three years, with an option for another two seasons.
The idea behind the deal is to sign Vincenzo Nibali as the leader from from 2017 when Cancellara has ended his career and Nibali's contract with Astana expires. The winner of the 2014 Tour de France is very close to renewing with the squad of Alexander Vinokourov for one season but may now be tempted by the new project of Trek-Segafredo.
It is already official that that Mapei Sport, the sports science and reaseach center in Milan, will Trek Factory Racing next season and so the famous brand returns to the elite of world cycling after 14 years. The agreement means the definitive commitment of the US team to sports science, under the leadership of Josu Larrazabal who is responsible for performance at Trek. He will now have the infrastructure and experience of Mapei Sport to improve the training.
